A polite rebel: Manuela Pavesi

Manuela Pavesi is a gifted photographer, stylist, Fashion Director at Prada and a style star on her own. She began her career as fashion editor and stylist at Italian Vogue in the early ‘90s working with artists like Irving Penn, Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin. Inspired by them she pursued photography as a more fulfilling career capture on lens supermodels for Vogue, Elle US, Allure, i-D and  Purple fashion magazine. Nowdays she lands her unique mark in avant-garde publications like Grey, Tank and Zoo Magazine and also Vogue Japan, teaming with well-known stylists Anna Dello Russo and Elisa Nalin.

As a fashion photographer Manuela Pavesi displays great portrait techniques, her pictures have an intriguing intimate quality. The model’s staring into the lens helps with that feeling. Vintage interiors or blooming backyards are the settings for Pavesi’s subtle rebellious artistic statement. Models mostly sit down or in a relaxed pose, sometimes barefooted, but the air is lively, filled with their emotions. The atmosphere is unrestrained, melancholic or playful but always with a defiant, inquisitive expression.

You will understand more about Pavesi’s work with a quote from the photographer’s interview featured in Self Service magazine Spring/Summer 2012 issue: “I don’t like riches that aren’t accompanied by thought, and I don’t like bourgeoisie if it becomes narrow-minded and uncultured. I like mystery; I don’t like affection. All those things that come from it don’t interest me. People feel safe in affection. And I’m always looking for, and intrigued by, content. I love the unconventional and I’m always looking for it.”
