Best of London Fashion Week

Christopher Kane, Erdem and Vivienne Westwood are my top favorite fall 2008 collections for their distinct and confident message.

Christopher Kane's fall 2008 collection is focused more on innovative textures and material combinations. There are several party dresses with layers of organdy and plastic sequins. The same form of decoration is seen on sheer pants, one pair teamed with a stud-embellished sweater, and also on a black cashmere knitted tabard. Novelties were also those collarless jackets with a 3D texture created by some sort of ruched appliqué.

Erdem is just getting better and better. His fall 2008 collection is an amazing burst of color, embroidery and bejeweling. I love that white lace trench, the purple pleated short cocktail dress, the short coats in bright colors and those long gowns in duchesse silk with vibrant prints, like a view of a landscape speeding by.

Vivienne Westwood's more affordable line, the Red Label, had an incendiary fall 2008 show. Leaving aside the political protest message, the collection was simply hot. It gathered Westwood's trademark tailoring in traditional tweed, tartan, pinstripe and houndstooth, but also in velvet and jersey. The highlights included a coat with rounded lapels and baggy hem, a gorgeous black-and-white draped corsage cocktail dress and a short-pants suit worn with over-the-knee suede boots.
