Andrej Pejic is the 19-year old male model that provoked the most recent censorship in the fashion world. His strong androgynous look pictured topless on the cover of Dossier Magazine stirred up book retailers Barnes&Noble and Borders.
Andrej says he feels comfortable modeling both men's wear as well as womenswear though the later is more glamorous. Tall and very slender with feminine features - full lips, arched brows, heart shaped face - and long platinum blond hair Pejic was discovered at the age of seventeen and he used his ambiguous sensuality to his modeling career advantage.
Only this season he stars in two big ad campaigns: Jean Paul Gaultier and Marc by Marc Jacobs (menswear) spring/summer 2011 and in many fashion editorials in iconic magazines such as Vogue, Dazed Digital and L’Officiel. His outsider/refugee background contributed to his unusual look. Born in Bosnia, his Serbian/Croatian family fled the Balkan conflict in Serbia and when he was eight they all moved to Melbourne, Australia.
In early adolescence he started to experiment with his look out of unhappiness, feeling restricted by society’s gender boundaries. Well he found a great opportunity in today’s fashion industry’s appetite for androgynous beauty but he knows better than to take his success for granted and even thinks of continues his studies in law or economics.
