Browsing through Net-A-Porter’s new season offer I stumbled upon these exquisite garments signed by Indonesian label Biyan. It has a sophisticated-romantic style with elegant, fluid cuts covered in elaborate, stylized botanical silk prints and adorned with lavish embroidery and bead/crystal appliqué.
Born in Surabaya, Indonesia, Biyan Wanaatmadja trained as a fashion designer at Müller & Sohn Private Modeschule in Dusseldorf, Germany and at the London College of Fashion, UK and returned to his hometown to start his own womenswear brand.
Biyan’s fairy-like designs draw inspiration from Indonesia’s rich heritage (traditional costume and spectacular flora) combined with Europe’s sartorial techniques. The cut of the clothes is minimalist-prim with collarless jackets, jewel necklines, A-line dresses, perfect displays for prints and embellishments.
There is an obvious hint to the elegant past (cca 1920) in Biyan summer 2013 collection with retro classic designs such as chemise frocks, drop-waist dresses, cocoon shapes, draped sleeves, gathered pleats and floral embroideries; also the ad campaign sends out an ethereal, nostalgic feel.
Techno fabrics and design techniques like embroidered mesh or the clashing mix of digital prints bring this collection to modern time.
Biyan summer 2013 collection is available online at Net-A-Porter.
