And the Oscar goes to....the red gown, which was the major hit of this year ceremony. Rich shades of rose and scarlet red made the parade runner fade away. Among other trends spotted, the one-shoulder dress is set to be this spring's highlight while the mermad silhouette, which Marion Cotillard took it literally, was almost everyone's favorite.

Oscar fashion: red gowns

Anne Hathaway (Marchesa), Heidi Klum (John Galliano), Helen Mirren (George Chakra) and Katherine Heigl (Escada)

The glitzy metallics and the bright white were replaced by shimmering dresses sprinkled only with gold and silver embellishment and subtler, sweeter shades of pale pink and mother-of-pearl white.

Oscar fashion: light colored gowns

Marion Cotillard (Jean Paul Gaultier), Renee Zellweger (Carolina Herrera), Cameron Diaz (Dior by Galliano) and Keri Russell (Nina Ricci).

Dark, deep hues of navy, violet and green reigned over last season's loud, fluoro shades.

Oscar fashion: navy, dark purple and green

Penelope Cruz (Chanel Couture), Amy Ryan (Calvin Klein), Cate Blanchett (Dries Van Noten) and Amy Adams (Proenza Schouler).

The black gown is always a reliable red carpet choice, from the very ruffled dress of Jennifer Garner to the surprising, simple vintage piece worn by the young nominee Ellen Page.

Oscar fashion: black gowns

Hilary Swank (Atelier Versace), Jennifer Garner (Oscar de la Renta), Laura Linney (Michael Kors) and Ellen Page in vintage couture Jean-Louis Scherrer.
