Painterly Abstraction

Abstract prints
Abstract prints

After borrowing rich colors from brilliant painters like Rembrandt and Vermeer for their fall 2007 collections, designers kept an artistic mood and, for spring 2008, they came up with one of kind abstract painterly prints. This trend brings forward a palette of clear, intense colors with splashes of white and black.

Abstract PrintsAbstract Prints Left to right: Avsh Alom, Basso & Brooke, Clare Tough, Dolce & Gabbana and Missoni.
Second row: Dolce & Gabbana, Marios Schwab, Marni and Giles.

The dress becomes canvas for vibrant, fluid-looking prints, brush strokes or drops of paint saturated in clear, bright color. Dolce & Gabbana evoke the painter work clothes, all sprinkled with paint. At Clare Tough the print reminds me of a Jackson Pollock painting. The Modernism movement must have influenced Marni and Marios Schwab as well.

The Toga Dress

Toga Dress

Not only Alberta Ferretti was inspired by Ancient Rome for her spring 2008 collection. Many other designers sent on the runway their own versions over the classics. The last season's one-shoulder dress became lovely draped toga-like tunics, mini dresses...

Global Poetry

Asian influences

Ethnic accents continue to be a strong presence in fashion, merging into a globetrotter look. Spring 2008 means the revival of Asian influences brought forward into an eclectic mix: obi-style belts at Alessandro Dell'Acqua, variations...

Red, White and Black

Agnes B. Spring

I love this crisp and dynamic trio of red, white and black. It's a classic one but always looks young and fresh. Many designers used it for their spring 2008 collections and I can see why. Neutrals combined with pops of bright red creates...

Plaids are IN for spring 2008

Plaid trend

Plaids are no longer fall season prints. In fact I saw many fashion rules being dashed these past few season and that's a good thing, right? That's what it's all about, a permanent change and reinterpretation. I very much like this doll...

Lena Criveanu Spring/Summer 2008

Lena Criveanu Spring/Summer

This is only the forth signature collection for Romanian designer Lena Criveanu and she is already considered one of the most valuable names in Romanian fashion. Among the top three, I'd say. After her debut in 2006, her career went sky high, the designer...

Mad about Plaid… and checks

Plaid and checks

The classic fall pattern is brighter and bolder than before. I’ve seen it almost everywhere, from preppy youthful looks to “hunting club” outfits and even on cocktail dresses and delicate blouses.

A statement coat is a must have this fall so you...

Folkloric Influences

Folkloric Influences

One rich source of inspiration for fashion designers is the vast cultural heritage of all countries around the world. Reinterpreting the folk costume has always been a challenging task and the folk trend comes back to attention every now and then.

Spring 2008 Trend: Sassy Cut-Outs

Sassy Cut-Outs

The latest scoop on what fashion is IN: well, it's about more skin. No, I'm not talking about mini dresses or deep cleavage. Designers gave us more reasons to work the hell out those abs: short, uber sexy dresses featuring naughty cut-outs, with focus on...

It seems like this season is going to be a fun one. The cheerful polka dots pattern is not a retro cliché anymore. Designers made it look modern and fresh for this season.

Spring trends: 80s Mania

Spring trends: 80s Mania

I don’t know what to think of this trend, it’s really annoying. It’s like all those awful, ugly clothes I was forced to see or wear in my childhood years are now back to haunt me.

Ok, leggings…are ok, but only in black, grey or navy. Also sequins...
