Garnet is January's birthstone. A hard, long-lasting, frequently very brilliant stone, it's accessible in lots of colors other than the common deep red, including green, yellow, orange, pink and violet.

Garnet comes about in certain shades of red that have been taken for some varieties of ruby. In yellow, it has been mistaken with expensive topaz. In fact, garnets can be found in nearly every color and shade with the exception of blue.
