New York Fashion Week Spring 2009 Trends

New York Fashion Week
New York Fashion Week
Until the big overview released usually in Jan/February here are some of the spring 2009 trends highlighted at New York Fashion Week.

All-over frills and ruffles is still a big trend but what got my attention were these amazing sinuous tiered ruffles that call to mind exotic sea creatures.

New York trend spring 2009: tiered ruffles

3.1 Phillip Lim, Preen, Yigal Azrouël

Sheer fabrics and sheer+opaque fabric combinations are a strong look for spring 2009. Take a look at these innovative collages, especially the ribbon embroidery on tulle (I think) at Alexander Wang. Although I feel that the only wearable piece here is the white bolero from Ralph Rucci.

New York trend spring 2009: opaque/sheer cutouts

Preen, Rodarte, Alexander Wang, Chado Ralph Rucci

Spring 2009 alternatives to classic lace: laser cut patterns and broderie anglaise.

New York trend spring 2009: laser cut

Zac Posen, Jeremy Laing, Vivienne Tam, Oscar de la Renta

I think I've seen this few seasons ago: body-conscious bondage dresses. Rodarte gives the trend a romantic punk twist, if I can say so.

New York trend spring 2009: bondage

Hervé Léger, Narciso Rodriguez, Thakoon, Rodarte

The zipper is a modern fashion-statement, both functional and decorative; metallic zippers on black/white fabrics have a bigger visual impact.

New York trend spring 2009: zippers

Diesel, Matthew Williamson, Michael Kors, Preen

There were a lot of floral prints (roses), ethnic patterns and abstract illustrations; I loved these vibrant Op-art prints.

New York trend spring 2009: op-art prints

Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Jonathan Saunders

One of the prettiest trends at New York Fashion Week: butterflies in prints, embroidery and appliqué.

New York trend spring 2009: butterflies

Diane Von Furstenberg, Koi Suwannagate (2nd and 3rd), Badgley Mischka, Tibi

Another one is the classic bow bodice dress translated into new looks from playful chic to surrealistic glamorous (Marchesa)

New York trend spring 2009: big bows

Lela Rose, Marchesa, United Bamboo

The little white dress, body-conscious or not, with couture worthy details is a serious candidate for next spring's wardrobe staple.

New York trend spring 2009: little white dress

Isaac Mizrahi, Zac Posen, Jason Wu, Preen, Luca Luca
