The Lexash: Nigerian Fashion Photography With Personality

A yellow dress, magenta feathers, and a steady gaze: The Lexash gives fashion lovers plenty to look at. His photographs also invite a slower question: how do clothes, lighting, and expression work together?

Who Is The Lexash?

Alexander Chidiebere Ashimole, also known as Lex Ash, works in Lagos as a Nigerian fashion photographer and creative director. He taught himself photography while studying estate management at Covenant University, borrowing a friend's camera to practice.

He wanted to increase the number of photographs of Black people, including Nigerians, online. His professional background also includes corporate communications at Unilever Nigeria and brand and design work at Andela.

What Makes His Fashion Images Worth Studying?

The yellow dress photograph pairs floral details and magenta feathers with a blue-gray background. A plain wooden box gives the seated model somewhere to rest her arm. The styling supplies drama; the spacious composition gives it room.

Another photograph places two models in black against a gray wall. Bands of shadow cross the scene, while light catches cheekbones and shoulders. To my eye, these choices keep attention on faces and posture. A lavish set would have very little to add.

A Willingness to Try Something New

Early on, he planned shoots with mood boards, models' own clothes, and secondhand finds. In 2022, he described testing fresh ideas on every set and favoring a 50mm lens.

He also kept personal control of color grading, even when assistants helped with retouching. For a fashion team, that suggests a useful habit: decide who owns the final color decisions before the shoot.

Where Should You Start With His Portfolio?

His work spans fashion, beauty, portraits, commercial photography, weddings, and events. Choose a section that matches your purpose.

Your interestPortfolio section
Clothing and editorial stylingFashion / Editorials

Celebrations and event coverageWeddings / Events

Before planning a shoot, use three questions to turn admiration into a useful brief:

  • Which colors should lead the picture?
  • What should the pose or expression communicate?
  • Which props actually help tell the story?

A mood board full of beautiful pictures still needs a clear idea. Answering those questions gives the photographer, stylist, and makeup artist something concrete to work toward.

Pro-Tip: Write a Sharper Brief

Choose one photograph and describe its lighting, palette, and mood in a sentence. Then build your own concept from those observations. Start with the person, choose the clothes, and give every prop a reason to stay.
