Oscar fantasy dresses

Oscar dresses

Oscars are only one day ahead and I can hardly wait the red carpet parade (and so is the rest of the fashion world). I guess you've already seen this but I couldn't resist posting it. Style.com asked 10 fashion designers to draw their dream dress for each of the Oscar nominated ladies. It's quite likely that this fashion fantasy will not match up the real Oscar red carpet but it's interesting to see how designers' and actresses' personalities join in to create the perfect dress.

Oscar dresses for Best Actress nominees

Left to right: Barbara Tfank for Marion Cotillard, Phillip Lim for Ellen Page and Doo.Ri for Laura Linney

Barbara Tfank's suggestion for Marion Cotillard is a glamorous gown with an old-Hollywood touch: black and silver crepe with vintage diamond bejeweled shoulder buttons and a dramatic waterfall train. Phillip Lim drew an effervescent one-shoulder organza dress in a delicate almond shade for the 20-year-old newcomer Ellen Page. The playful fan detail and the cinched waist ad the right amount of cool. Doo-Ri Chung imagined a long, lean, and modern look for Laura Linney with this column dress made of deep navy silk georgette.

Oscar dresses for Best Supporting Actress nominees

Left to right: Peter Som for Cate Blanchett, Richard Chai for Tilda Swinton and Costello Tagliapietra for Amy Ryan.

Peter Som's suggestion for the double nominated Cate Blanchett is an ultra-opulent, royal gown in peacock shades of blue and green, with layers of chiffon and tulle cascading down from a ruched bodice and continuing with a long "red-carpet-dusting" train. Richard Chai, a stated fan of actress Tilda Swinton, envisioned her in an ethereal dress, a smoky, crinkle-chiffon column meant to enhance her quiet beauty and her avant-garde fashion flair. Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra imagined a modern, minimalist look for Amy Ryan, meant to emphasize her curves and elongate her frame: a draped gold velvet gown with controlled pleats and discreet shoulder blades revealing cut-outs.

Check out this style note for the other four virtual Oscar looks.
