Pop-art satire of Ion Barladeanu

Ion Barladeanu
Ion Barladeanu

Life hasn't been kind with Romanian artist Ion Barladeanu. During the communist regime he worked as grave digger and doorman, and after year 1989 he was reduced to a homeless condition. And, despite his incredible talent, his life didn’t change much after the whole world discovered his witty parodic pop-art collages. Born in 1946, in Zapodeni, a small Romanian village, which he left at the age of 18, Barladeanu started making collages as a way to escape his dark reality.

He was discovered in 2008 by Ovidiu Fenes who recommended him to Dan Popescu, owner of H’Art Gallery. His works were shown first in Bucharest, then Basel, London and Paris. Everywhere in the world critics considered them absolutely brilliant.

Most of his satiric collages, which he teasingly calls them movies, are inspired by characters from the Romanian political scene (the dreaded Ceausescu couple especially) whose printed images are glued next to international pop culture idols, wildlife photographs and glossy magazines cut-outs creating a splendid mise-en-scène with a mixed Dadaist, Comic strip and Surrealist aesthetic.

Ion Barladeanu inspired many journalists, writers and directors including Alexander Nanau, creator of “The World According to Ion B.”, an HBO documentary rewarded with an Emmy Prize in 2010. Alexander Nanau’s success unleashed a series of dissensions between Barladeanu, Nanau and Dan Popescu, regarding Barladeanu’s justified gains. Nowadays, the 65 years old Romanian artist lives in a small flat in Bucharest, provided to him by H’Art Gallery.

we thank H’Art Gallery and mr. Dan Popescu for sending us a few photographs after Ion Barladeanu’s collages.

In Bloom illustration by Peggy Wolf

After studying Fashion Design for five years German artist Peggy Wolf decided that she loved drawing fashionable women more than making clothes for them. So after graduation in 2004 she began doing freelance illustration...

Outfit for a busy weekend

I played a little with polyvore.com (I even put a little cute background there, see?) and here is the result. I was thinking at an outfit suitable for a busy weekend, you know, when you pick up the threads of your social life, finally going...

How to wear the leather biker jacket

Casual Style

Did you recently bought a leather jacket and don’t know how to wear it? I’m sure planning to invest in one as soon as possible. But it seems that the fashion elite have developed a sort of a uniform: a casual look with skinny jeans and...

Art among skeletons

Joe Vollan Painting

Joe Vollan's art seems inspired by nightmares, fears, menaces, by nature and its cruel rules. And most of all, Joe Vollan's paintings are without exception author's mind processes. Through his surrealistic pieces of art,...

Volume trend and shapeless clothes

Volume trend
This is one of the trends I don’t think I’ll ever wear. I think it looks good only on skinny tall figures, “modellish” ones. Volume trend I don’t know what is with this tendency in hiding the woman’s body and making it look just hideous, like...

Red, White and Black

Agnes B. Spring

I love this crisp and dynamic trio of red, white and black. It's a classic one but always looks young and fresh. Many designers used it for their spring 2008 collections and I can see why. Neutrals combined with pops of bright red creates...

The illustrated satire of Pawel Kuczynski

Pawel Kuczynski, Apple

When I first saw Pawel Kuczynski’s illustrations I feared I had too little words to describe them. In brief, I must say that his works are absolutely incredible. And I’m not talking only about their fine, sharp lines, their vibrant...

Women, paintings and a Victorian self

Ray Caesar, Arabesque, 2009

Ray Caesar's paintings intrigue me in a way few artists do. You can consider them fantasy portrayals of beautiful, delicate youthful women, but if you look close enough you'll see that characters are not exactly what they seem to be. They...
