Developing an Appreciation for Art

Developing an Appreciation for Art
Developing an Appreciation for Art

The ability and desire to make art is one trait that sets humans apart from animals. Humanity began making art long before civilization ever began, and it has developed into myriad disciplines. If you have wanted to learn more about art but aren’t certain where to begin, here are some categories that can easily help you develop your appreciation.

Painting

When the subject of art comes up, most people think of painting first. There are many different styles of painting, as well as types of media. Some of the well-known styles include realism, impressionism, pointillism, abstract, and romantic. Media encompass both the paint substance and the surface to which it’s applied. Some artists stick to one medium while others experiment with all kinds, sometimes in the same painting. Examine pictures of the different styles to see which ones you like, and then go to your local art museum to see them in person.

Sculpture

Sculpture is probably the second most-popular type of art. Sculptors usually work either in hard materials such as stone and wood or soft materials such as clay. Many make initial pieces out of clay or wax and then cast them in bronze for permanence. Some of the most famous examples include Michelangelo’s Pieta, Rodin’s The Thinker, and inspirational art sculptures like Lady Liberty in New York and Break Through From Your Mold in Philadelphia.

Textiles

One of the most fascinating, and often overlooked, artistic mediums is textile and fabric. Weaving, felting, beading and needle arts have existed for thousands of years around the world. Many museums have stunning collections of textiles in the form of Navajo blankets, Persian rugs, and Oriental silk kimonos. Take a look, and you might be awed at what people have accomplished with looms and needles.

The greatest benefit of art is that so many styles and subjects exist that there truly is something for everyone. The more you explore, the more you will appreciate art!

What am I wearing this month?

October Outfit

October is the perfect time for wearing a biker jacket, a very short and fit one, and suede ankle boots. It’s still pretty sunny outside and it doesn’t rain that much. Skinny or straight jeans go perfect with this outfit and I love this long grey sweater...
